Content is one of the most effective channels on your site to broadcast your marketing message and motivate action from your visitors. So then why do so many websites make use of small fonts, small line heights squeezing text together and poor contrasting colours?
Legibility isn’t a secret art that few know about. Legibility is common sense that has been used from the early days of newspaper publishing yet website developers continue to specify these small fonts sizes and use text and background colours that render the content hard to read.
Poor legibility will cost you money. Customers who read content which is hard and sore on the eyes are likely to hit the back button and try the next site in Google.
Select a font size that is easy to read
The correct size should be easy to work out by adjusting the font size and reading the document as a whole. I can’t think of any logical reason to use a tiny font for your main site content so unless you have a solid reason you probably want to use something normal like 12pt.
Text should work with background colour
Why would you add an orange background with red text or red background with violet text? White and black is colours which when together display high contrast and other colours like Red and yellow, red and white, Orange and black, Yellow and blue and many other colours work well together as text/background colours.
