More and more alternative treatments for hair loss are being discovered as time goes by. The benefits of trying these alternatives are many, not the least of which is lower cost. Preventing hair loss would be the best option, but, for most of us, that realization comes too late.
Absent a medical condition, most hair loss is caused by DHT, or, dihydrotestosterone. Testosterone, the male sex hormone, is transformed to DHT by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. The DHT then acts on your hair follicles by choking off the blood supply and causing them to die.
For decades, your only treatment options were very expensive and only available from the medical community. But, even these treatments rarely provided the desired results. It seems that the world is never short of those looking to profit from the pain of others.
The advent of hair transplants made the treatment outcomes more certain. Many people, however, found that the high price of these transplants put them out of reach. The high price, general discomfort involved, and the length of time necessary for these procedures made finding alternatives more and more attractive.
For now, Minoxidil is the only OTC treatment for hair loss that is FDA approved. As you may expect, many of the “hucksters” are still out there, so beware of any alternative hair loss treatments that haven’t been independently tested. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consider other options, only that you should be careful what you choose to buy.
