For Our Healths Sake Stop Using MSG!
My dad and I are always at odds about the taste of food we cook. He finds mine always excessive in taste, too salty, too sweet, too thick. On the other hand, I find his cooking almost always unsavory due to my strong taste. To compensate for his otherwise neutral taste, he uses seasonings that offer more flavor. That’s why he never runs out of MSG, to which I strongly go against.
So what exactly is MSG? MSG short for Monosodium Glutamate is sodium salt of the non-essential amino acid Glutamic acid. It is used as a food additive and is commonly marketed as a flavor enhancer.
Over the years though, many medical researches and anecdotal reports link adverse reactions to regular consumption of MSG such as obesity, eye damage, depression, chest pain, among many others. Studies also relate that there’s mounting evidence that associates MSG to the increase in Autism and ADHD cases.
Reports say reactions vary from mild to severe, depending on dose, subject’s sensitivity and pre-existing conditions. However, to this date, there is no particular regulation yet that prohibits the use and sale of MSG in the market.
What are we, consumers, to do then when we are in such a dilemma of not knowing for certain if the food we eat won’t pose any danger in our health, whether immediately or in the long run?
I think it’s up to us to stay informed and protect ourselves through prevention. It’s pretty much going to start at home. It wouldn’t hurt us if our food will taste a little less flavorful than it used to be with MSG on it. Or maybe the better cooks in us will come out in trying to discover a natural way of making food taste better and more importantly, healthier.
