Having bought my computer last year, with great specs including very quick quad core Chipset, Ram to feed its speed and a hard drive that stores more than I can throw at it I have been looking at things that might improve the PC I already have.
1st If your processor is still cutting it with the market and is able to cope with working with the software you are using you don’t have to consider starting all over again. If it isn’t you may want to consider a new board and processor. Normally however once you start down this route it is probably worth just buying a new desktop as the separates often come in at more than a new PC.
2nd if we take it that your processor is quick enough, pack in the Ram it gives your processor the space to work at top efficiency. Look into which board you have and put the serial number into the search engines and you will then be able to pull out what memory your PC can use (the cost of Ram has come down by so much it’s of value investing in it).
Thirdly if you have a large collection of tunes or imagery that you want to stockpile, manipulate, work with, play then have an individual super fast drive to help you access your data quickly don’t be fooled by large disc volumes which have a rotation and read speed RPM of 5400 not acceptable, 7400 exceptable and 9600 Yeha!. These first three are things that will effect your every day experience of computing.
4th If you have an aging computer that is good, but no longer cuts the mustard, you don’t have to get shot of it you can use it as an secondary system that you work with when you require the information stored on that system and let it run applications in the background without effecting your new PC in anyway. The use of a KVM switch is excellent for this as it permits you to jump between computers using the same Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor to use both systems at the click of a swith.
Make sure you have the best Broadband connection you can afford. You don’t have to have the massive file usage of an Austin Hughes Rack mount Server to require a download rate that wont seem like its stuck when you download pictures, videos or songs. Check online to discover a provider in your localiy, then discover what the maximum download speed your telephone line can actually provide, instead of the one proposed by the broadband provider (it just stops you handing out loads of money for download speeds you will never reach) if you can link in unlimited download amounts to this all the better though a lot of individuals get caught by the fair use policy if you use the internet a lot.
Hope this has helped and I will provide more at some other time.
