Most people have had the experience of ringing in their ears after being exposed to a loud noise, or when their pulse is racing. Some people suffer from the negative affects with a constant ringing in their ears. Constant ringing, buzzing, or other noise in the ears is called tinnitus.

These noises may or may not be caused by a problem that is diagnosable, they are not from the sufferer’s external environment but originate in their ears. Many causes of ringing of the ears can be identified but not all people are able to ascertain the root problem. Likewise, some people can find relief through tinnitus treatments and others cannot and are forced to deal with the noise permanently.

There are two main types of diagnosable tinnitus. Which sounds like the heartbeat, is usually caused by a physical problem with the muscles near the ear, damage to the ear canal, or vascular problems in the blood vessels near the ears,noise in the ears that is pulsatile. This type of tinnitus can sometimes be cured if the damage heals or is corrected. When the injury to the ear is irreversible this type of tinnitus is permanent.

Non-pulsatile tinnitus is the classic ringing in the ears associated with tinnitus and can be ringing, buzzing, hissing, or similar sounds. This type of tinnitus is caused by nerve problems. Nerves that have suffered damage transmit impulses to the head and this results in perpetual noise in the ears. Hard to treat and is often permanent,this type of tinnitus can be.

Sufferers are not able to point out the source of the problem even though tinnitus has many known causes. A common reason that tinnitus develops as well as exposure to loud noises such as working in a loud environment for many years or many years of iPod use is age related hearing loss. There are other common causes of tinnitus which include:

A build-up of earwax. A mixture of some medicines also containing aspirin. Commonly occurring infections or injuries to the eardrum or to the various parts of inner ear. Head or neck injuries Pressure changes in the environment Vascular or blood flow problems in the head or neck. Nerve problems or damage or nerve disorders. Certain diseases such as Aoustic Neuroma, Otosclerosis, or Thyroid disease.

Tinnitus can resolve itself and may not require medical treatment. However, some cases of tinnitus are permanent while others require medical help and treatment to cure or improve the symptoms.

Ringing in the ears is not easy to live with and one needs some kind of relief also.
