In a Taekwondo bout, full body protection is used to protect the competitors. To reduce any chance of a head injury, a fighter would not be allowed to engage in a competition three months if he or she was knockedunconciousst by a blow to the head. If the same incident happens again after these three months, you’re not allowed to take part for half a year. Another knockoutto the head after this half year period results in a final exclusion of competitions.
ITF Tae kwon do is only semi-contact. Practitioners not allowed to attack the head with full force. Although, it is allowed to throw punches to the head, using the so-called “killing-blow”, stop just an inch before the target. To reduce injuries, ITF use gloves at sparring-competition.
